New York City’s Job Growth Has a Quality Problem
My article for Vital City, and why the source of new job creation in NYC is worrying
I wanted to share that I have a piece out with Vital City today on a topic that I and many others have been banging the drum on: NYC’s stagnant job creation and the growing issues with where the new jobs are coming from.
Since I first wrote about the danger of this limited and concentrated job growth, there has been growing attention and worry, but still little action. At a recent City Council hearing, Council leader Julie Menin asked where the Mayor’s job plan is and what the strategy is to fuel job creation. At the same time, Mayor Mamdani has yet to name a CEO for the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which is a key engine of economic growth the City should utilize.
Mayor Mamdani ran on an affordability platform and has shown he cares deeply about addressing NYC’s affordability crisis through plans on housing and transit. The third leg of this affordability stool that must be tackled is jobs. Creating high-paying jobs based in New York will be necessary to truly mitigate the affordability crisis, while also helping to shore up chronic city budget gaps moving forward.
